Raise the bar, push the limits.

Well folks, as you can tell I am in this contest to win it.  I hope to win for numerous reasons...Mainly it's to actually raise the bar of what is considered inventive, functional design, while entertaining everyone in the process.  I am aware that my ideas might not be for everyone, but change in the norm is inevitable and progressive design is my passion.  Through out the series (Design Star) I have been pushing the limits of creativity while staying true to myself.  In most of the challenges, as you can tell it really has not just been about designing a functional space for one to exist in.  There have been certain rules, regulations, boundaries, budget constraints, team influence and time crunches.  These restrictions were the most critical part in the competitions, another way I'd have to find to put myself in the lead and to stay there. 
Most people don't skate..most may not skate after dinner or during dinner for that matter.  Some of us would not be able to relax on a couch while in a six foot barrel of water, or would want to spin their entire room to watch the kids play outside, then turn to face the fire seconds later. 
Yet for a select few, these moments, creative ideas and options have been a dream for some time for some people.  I could have played it safe, yet I am not here to play it safe...we as a design community must and constantly raise the bar of design and be willing to crash in the attempt, or remain mired in mediocrity.  I have and always will push the envelope, while stretching the rules to there limits to bring the client, viewer and judges into a territory they are unfamiliar with.  It would be easy to stay classic, combine styles and fly under the radar, yet to me what is truly fine design is pushing ones limits, taking the viewers/clients dreams and making them better...We need to anticipate taking risks' and constantly trying to develop the next best thing...

Good solid design for everyday comes easy to me, but if the client wants monumental, this is where it starts to get challenging.  I thrive on such challenge and can't wait for those opportunities.  Stay tuned folks.  This is a competition, not your everyday reality show and the one to be your next Design Star should entertain you with good design, as well as show you what can you do to stay on the leading edge of Epic design.

All of the other contestants are very good at what they do and genuinely wonderful people.  The ones that were voted off, took chances.  Like we all should.  They will all be back, somewhere, sometime soon...

Many thrive on what is next, new and smart.  I want to make things better for all of us...  It will only get better folks, just be willing to take some chances out there.  Most importantly..have some fun!

The quest for innovative design ideas never ends...

 

Those of us here at Epic Spaces have missed Todd greatly these past few weeks.  However, after being separated from his lovely wife Gena for two months during the filming of Design Star he insisted that he be allowed to make it up to her.

We reluctantly agreed...on one condition, that he bring his eye for design and a shopping list of goodies from abroad.  No more T-shirts this time please.

So, like the venerable J. Peterman of Seinfeld fame he went in search of the hand woven albino alpaca fleece throw pillows made famous by a remote tribe found only in southern Patagonia.  The decent into the tribe's haven wasn't without risk, and Todd suffered torn ligaments resulting from a fall shortly after the above photo was taken.  Thankfully the tribal shaman was aware of Todd's quest and was led to our stricken traveler by the spirits of his ancestors.  After being nursed back to health on a tonic of llama urine and rare lichens he was able to continue on his journey to find the next item on his shopping list...the vastly under appreciated gaucho chic.

Global Research and Development

Well folks its been a few weeks since the last post, but for a good reason.  I needed to find the next monumental design to undertake.  Requests' for "Epic Spaces" have been going through the roof, yet what family or organization really needs something monumental to enhance their lives...

During the past two weeks while snowboarding in Argentina, I thought often on what makes a living space epic.  I find a great deal of inspiration while travelling abroad.  Enabling me to bring a reflection of foreign lands to my clients.  We must bring the waves into the living room, mountains into the bedroom, indoor mini helicopters to deliver our food across the table...etc.

We need to live in our own dreams folks..that "dream house" where you could be right now. Fresh ideas, hard work and my spare time, will transform your home/office space into the environment that you would want to be in at all times.  A space that could be forever changing and transforming depending on your mood sound interesting?  I have done proximity, large format, convex wall, digital slide shows choreographed with strategic aromas that are emitted while the room shakes and sways to the changing scenery.  Sounds chaotic? Possibly nerve racking?  No? If not, give the serene, ambient, zen-like retreat a try...allowing oneself to be overcome with complete focused relaxation customized to your wildest dreams and desires.

What I'm getting at is that the world can be offered to you, family and guests in a way that one will feel as if they are actually where they collectively want to be at any given moment, while maintaining a very functional welcoming room.

We work long, hard hours, with devotion that eats into our precious spare time that should be used to Heli-ski the Andes or sit quietly amongst a bed of ferns under the largest redwood in the world.

My travels haven't been all design research and development. I've been working to put a wonderful team of designers together, who have been cut from the show. These designers now have plenty of spare time to help all of us out. Would you want some of the other, world class, maverick designers, who may possibly be the most innovative individuals in the nation to help with your design needs? So far only "Robb" has agreed to help out, but I'll be working on the others.  I miss all my castmates dearly. I hope...I get the chance to work with them all again.  I hope...I will not be sent to the "Your show has been canceled" chamber to talk about how my efforts have come up short.

Please watch the show folks..and try to realize that I'm not just trying to save the whales, I'm trying to save the world. I want to bring the entire world to you, while you relax and ponder who will be next?   

HGTV Design Star | Week 3 and Todd Davis is In Style

Three weeks into the second season and Todd is still alive in the competition for HGTV's next Design Star. In fact, Todd won this week's challenge and is going to assist on an In Style magazine shoot.
